"The problem with most failing businesses is not that their owners don’t know enough about finance, marketing, management, and operations -- they don’t, but those things are easy enough to learn -- but that they spend their time and energy defending what they think they know. My experience has shown me that the people who are exceptionally good in business aren’t so because of what they know but because of their insatiable need to know more."
- Michael Gerber

These sections are full of quotes by Jim Rohn, America's Foremost Business Philosopher:

FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

Shortly after I met my mentor he asked me, "Mr. Rohn, how much money have you saved and invested over the last six years?" And I said, "None." He then asked, "Who sold you on that plan?"

It is better to be a lender than a spender.

To become financially independent you must turn part of your income into capital; turn capital into enterprise; turn enterprise into profit; turn profit into investment; and turn investment into financial independence.

Financial independence is the ability to live from the income of your own personal resources.

If you depend on your company to take care of your retirement, your future income will be divided by five. Take care of it yourself, and you can multiply your future income by five.

I remember saying to my mentor, "If I had more money, I would have a better plan." He quickly responded, "I would suggest that if you had a better plan, you would have more money." You see, it's not the amount that counts; it's the plan that counts. If you were to show me your current financial plan, would I get so excited by it that I would go across the country and lecture on it? If the answer is no, then here's my question: "Why not"? Why wouldn't you have a superior financial plan that is taking you to the places you want to go?

I used to say, "Things cost too much." Then my teacher straightened me out on that by saying, "The problem isn't that things cost too much. The problem is that you can't afford it."

That's when I finally understood that the problem wasn't "it" - the problem was "me." The Bible says that it is hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. It doesn't say that it is impossible!

CAREER/MARKETPLACE

My father taught me to always do more than you get paid for as an investment in your future. Whether you stay six weeks, six months or six years, always leave it better than you found it.

Don't bring your need to the marketplace, bring your skill. If you don't feel well, tell your doctor, but not the marketplace. If you need money, go to the bank, but not the marketplace.

If you make a sale, you can make a living. If you make an investment of time and good service in a customer, you can make a fortune.

Don't just let your business or your job make something for you; let it make something of you.

Lack of homework shows up in the marketplace as well as in the classroom.

Where you start in the marketplace is not where you have to stay.

The worst days of those who enjoy what they do are better than the best days of those who don't.

We get paid for bringing value to the marketplace. It takes time to bring value to the marketplace, but we get paid for the value, not the time.

Here's the major problem with going on strike for more money: You cannot get rich by demand.

LEADERSHIP/MANAGEMENT

"The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly."

"We must learn to help those who deserve it, not just those who need it. Life responds to deserve not need."

"My mentor said, 'Let's go do it', not 'You go do it'.

How powerful when someone says, 'Let's!'"

"Good people are found not changed. Recently I read a headline that said, "We don't teach people to be nice. We simply hire nice people." Wow! What a clever short cut."

"Managers help people see themselves as they are; Leaders help people to see themselves better than they are."

"Learn to help people with more than just their jobs: help them with their lives."

SUCCESS AND FAILURE

Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become.

Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. You don't fail overnight. Instead, failure is a few errors in judgment, repeated every day.

Don't take the casual approach to life. Casualness leads to casualties.

Success is the study of the obvious. Everyone should take Obvious I and Obvious II in school.

It's too bad failures don't give seminars. Wouldn't that be valuable? If you meet a guy who has messed up his life for forty years, you've just got to say, "John, if I bring my journal and promise to take good notes, would you spend a day with me?"

Success is not so much what we have as it is what we are.

Success is 20% skills and 80% strategy. You might know how to read, but more importantly, what's your plan to read?

Average people look for ways of getting away with it; successful people look for ways of getting on with it.

BASICS/FUNDAMENTALS

Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying basic fundamentals.

There are no new fundamentals. You've got to be a little suspicious of someone who says, "I've got a new fundamental." That's like someone inviting you to tour a factory where they are manufacturing antiques.

Some things you have to do every day. Eating seven apples on Saturday night instead of one a day just isn't going to get the job done.

Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day; while failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day. It is the accumulative weight of our disciplines and our judgments that leads us to either fortune or failure.

ENTERPRISE

Human beings have the remarkable ability to turn nothing into something. They can turn weeds into gardens and pennies into fortunes.

Enterprise is better than ease.

Showing a profit means touching something and leaving it better than you found it.

Enterprise is the hope of our future.

Profits are better than wages. Wages make you a living; profits make you a fortune.

We all know a variety of ways to make a living. What's even more fascinating is figuring out ways to make a fortune.

Kids ought to have two bicycles, one to ride and one to rent.

How can I make money ethically and wisely?

Emancipatory Spirituality by Michael Lerner -

We are in the midst of an extraordinary upsurge of interest in the realm of the Spirit. Tens of millions of people in advanced industrial societies live at a level of material well-being that far surpasses the luxuries and comforts available to kings, queens, and nobles just a few hundred years ago. But many of these are in the vanguard of those who seek a new spiritual reality.

Market Research

About 83 million Americans are spending some $27 billion a year on alternative care, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. With these patients and dollars in mind, about 13 percent of U.S. hospitals provide alternative therapies, according to a survey of about 1,000 hospitals by the consulting firm Deloitte & Touche. The figure rises to 25 percent for inner city hospitals and 32 percent for hospitals with at least 500 beds.

If you are interested in management and spirituality, we have just published a paper called: win win in the wind , which is an holistic approach to negotiating.
(whole article: http://www.orbina.com/ayala/winwin.doc
Here is the abstract:

WWW: Win Win with the Wind
People in any organization need to collaborate with their clients, suppliers, colleagues, boss and others. However, in many cases there is no harmony between the various players but conflicts and disagreements. In order to create or enhance a fruitful collaboration, there is first to deal with negotiation process and conflict resolution.

We are developing a negotiation tool called V-NeP (Virtual Negotiation Edutainment Program) that includes an expert system based on best practices, online moderators using a webconference, a knowledge management methodology and intelligent agents.

The negotiation process includes the following cyclic steps: define the issue, know yourself, know the other, know the environment, create a map of the situation, identify on the map the ‘stucked-weak’ points and the strong ones, solve the identified problems, go along the path in order to reach a win win situation.

The interaction between human beings dictates the need to reach the best practices of person to person communication. This is where spirituality comes about.

Spiritual attitudes and tools can contribute to every step of the negotiation process. We use those tools to understand a person’s position, know the other, understand the situation between two or more people, clarify points about the environment, help identify the weak and the strong points and improve the process.

Using ancient knowledge from the East, we can connect the seven chakras to qualities that can be awakened along the past, present and future channels:

1st Center: Innocence, Modesty, Intelligence, Purity

2nd Center: Pure knowledge, Pure Attention, Creativity

3rd Center: Master principle, Contentment

4th Center: Faith, Fearless, Responsibility

5th Center: Self-respect, Communication, Collective, Respect toward others

6th Center: Perception, Forgiveness

7th Center: Union

Thanks to these spiritual tools, we are able to identify the locations where, on the one hand, the collaboration process does not flow and, on the other hand, where it freely flows. We are able to identify in each of those points the nature of the obstacle, which chakra it is connected to and use this information to free the ‘stucked’ points.

In addition, for every person involved in the process, we can help identify the dynamic situation of their chakras, actually find the ‘stucked’ points and help release them. Working with an individual is part of a larger process called the spiritual path.

Throughout V-NeP, the following spiritual tools are being used:

Web-based interactive questionnaire gathering information that helps to find the strengths and obstacles in the energy flow of the person and the environment.

Meditation facilitator who is able to pinpoint the energy chart of the chakras for various situations and people.

Use of other tools that help identify and release the situation of closed and opened chakras: indian medicine cards, alternative medicine and techniques like Chinese medicine.

As a conclusion, the spiritual tools that we are using constitute an important part in the process to reach a win win negotiation. This approach is about enhancing the collaboration between people, their clients, suppliers as well in their own environment with their peers, senior management, line managers and with… themselves.
