Shamanism
As an archaic and perennial visionary tradition, shamanism is common to Asia, Siberia, the Pacific Islands, the Americas, and the ancient Indo-European peoples.
Where practised, the community's spiritual life centres on the shaman, who is the intermediary between earth, the underworld and the heavens, visiting these planes to confer with the gods, heal living souls and to escort the dead. Access to these levels of reality is gained through trance induced by dancing, rhythmic drumming, psychotropic drugs, and sweat lodges.
