Wellness means prevention plus wholeness: harmony in relationships, work, goals, a balance of body, mind and spirit

1.Maintain a Healthy Weight

Quality of weight (muscle vs. fat) is ia a more important indicator than the number of pounds on the scale

2.Emphasize Protein

Eat foods high in protein eg. nonfat dairy foods, grains, legumes, seeds and nuts. Also low fat protein from beans and fish.

Emphasizing low-fat, mostly vegetable protein will help you keep your energy high, maintain strength, and rebuild tissue affected by treatments .

3. Increase Food Quality

Eat 'live' premium foods, those that are minimally processed, in a as close to their natural state as possible. Valuable nutrients, including fiber, vitamins, and minerals are often removed from refined foods. Refined foods contain excessive amounts of fat, salt and preservatives. Your first choice: fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and whole grains.

If a food is boxed canned, bottled or frozen, it has most often been processed and lacks the "live" nutritional content of the fresh alternative.

4. Determine that you will eat better than you have in your entire life.

The strategy:

Food Guidelines

Andrew Weil, in his book ' Eating Well for Optimum Health' advises us:

Avoid Soy Extracts

Possible Benefit of Ginseng

Is a raw vegetarian diet for everyone?

Stephen Arlin: All the biological traits of the human body, such as teeth, digestive system, alkalinity of the blood, saliva, and urine, etc., shows us that we are a vegetarian species. In addition to that, every living organism on planet Earth is a 100% raw-food eater; not 99%, not 70%, not 50% -- 100%! There are trillions of organisms and creatures on this planet that are thriving and living virtually disease-free eating 100% raw foods. There is only one organism that tampers with its food -- the human organism. Trillions to one! Those are staggering odds. That would make the likelihood that we should be eating cooked food about 100,000 times more improbable than winning the lottery. You don't want to bet against those kind of odds.

Stephen eats: 70% raw, organic fruit, 25% raw, organic, green-leafy vegetables, and 5% raw, organic nuts and sunflower seeds.

Vitamin D - eg. from Sunshine

Vitamin A /Carotenoids

Several studies show that Vitamin A and its relatives, especially beta and mixed carotene, contain anti cancer properties.

A Finnish study did show increased risk in lung cancer among male smokers who consume beta carotene. For non-smokers, the studies indicate a protective effect in pre-cancerous changes in the prostate, bladder and breast.

Some dosage intelligence is required.

Vitamin A is liver toxic in high doses; carotenoids found in fruits and vegetables are not.

Foods high in vitamin A / carotenoids:

Apricots, Broccoli. Butternut squash, Chard, CAntaloupe, Collard Greens, Carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, papaya, peaches, pumpkin, mangoes, oranges, red peppers, skim milk

Vitamin C

Fewer cancers of the stomach and esophagus occur to those whose diet emphasize citrus fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamin C.

Broccoli, Cabbage, Papaya, Kiwi, Grapefruit, Lemons and lime, oranges, potatoes, rutabagas

Calcium

Studies indicate a link between higher calcium intake and lower rates of intestinal cancer. Higher calcium consumption is also associated with reduced risk of osteoporosis. Foods high in calcium include:

Broccoli, Tofu, beans, sardines, nonfat cheese, nonfat yoghurt, figs (dried)

Cruciferous Vegetables

Studies show that eating vegetables from the cabbage family may reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal cancer. Cruciferous vegetables include

broccoli, Cauliflower, turnips, brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, rutabagas, brussel sprouts,

Vitamin E

Studies show that a high intake of Vitamin E may stimulate immune function. Other studies show that low blood levels of Vitamin E are linked with increased risk of lung, colon, and rectal cancer. Foods high in Vitamin E:

Cabbage, olive oil, canola oil, cabbage, collard greens, mangos, chard

Fiber

Diets high in fiber are linked with lower rates of colon cancer. The recommended daily fiber intake is 30 to 40 grams. Foods high in fiber include:

Apricots, Brown rice, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Peas, Bran cereal, Wheat germ, oranges, whole grain bread, beans (black and pinto), grapefruit, kidney beans

Selenium

Some studies indicate that high levels of selenium may lower cancer risk. Selenium may have a protective effect against breast and colon cancer. Foods high in selenium:

Tuna, Oatmeal, Whole grain breads, brown rice, whole grain cereals, skinless chicken breast

Low Fat

Nonfat milk, nonfat cheese, nonfat yoghurt, all fruits, all cereals and grains, all vegetables except avocados, all bread except biscuits and croissants,

Keep a journal

Keep a food diary in your wellness and Recovery journal/ Record all foods and beverages you consume. Be precise. Compare your diet with the above guidelines. Where is there room for improvement? Emphasize the "eat smart" guidelines in your diet.

The above information is from "Cancer 50 Essential Things to do, by Greg Anderson)

Red grapes and grape juice

Grape skins contain resveratrol, a phytoalexin, and other potent anti-cancer chemicals. Grape seeds contain pycnogenol, which is reputed to have anti-cancer properties, so if you can, crunch them rather than spitting them out.

Citrus Peel

Did you know that eating citrus fruits, including the peel, will help boost your cancer fighting ability? They contain chemicals called monoterpenes, including d-limonene, and have shown particular value in preventing breast, liver and lung cancer. Try kumquats which you can eat rind and all.

Nuts

Almonds and especially almond extract contain benzaldehyde, shown in Japanese clinical studies to exert an anti-cancer effect. So splash some into drinks and find creative ways to work this nut and flavoring into your diet. Brazil nuts are in the news too. In animal studies, they've been found to be more protective against cancer than pure selenium selenite. They also contain ellagic acid, which may remove or block cancer causing toxins. Adding a few of them a day to your diet sounds like a smart idea.

Edgar Cayce suggests a diet of 80% alkaline forming foods, 20% acid forming foods. Unfortunately most of us have got it the wrong way round! Edgar also suggests eating six organic almonds a day as a cancer preventative.

Over acid cells lose their flexibility. In the case of red blood cells, the loss of flexibility inhibits the elasticity and adaptability of the cells thus impeding bloodflow.

Acid Forming Foods

Alcohol, cigs, black tea, salt & sugar, chocolate, sweets, biscuits, soda crackers, dairy, meat, fish, fowl, canned frozen, fried, and micro - waved , tofu, soy, soft drinks, lemonade

Not acid forming Foods: Alkaline forming Foods

Avocado, fresh raw juice (fruit & veg), all fresh fruit except (plums & prunes) Steamed Vegetables, all raw veg, veg soup, all sprouts, all salad greens, onions, melons, dried figs, dates (without sulphur) raisins dulse, kelp

ideally see a qualified specialist - Nutrition specialist - maybe naturopath / ayurveda practitioner
