Flaxseed And Low-Fat Diet May Protect Against Prostate Cancer --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Previous research has indicated that high levels of dietary fibre and omega-3 fatty acids, rich sources of which are found in oily fish and flaxseed, affect hormone levels and may protect against the development of cancer. In addition, lignan, a substance found in flaxseed, has been shown to have a reductive effect on testosterone. Therefore, researchers from Duke University set out to test their theory that the combination of a low-fat, high-fibre diet containing lignan could benefit prostate cancer patients. Dr Wendy Demark-Wahnefried and colleagues conducted the research, which involved 25 men, with early and late stage prostate cancer, due to undergo surgery to remove their prostate gland. The participants received a diet that was low in fat and supplemented by three tablespoons of ground flaxseed per day. After a period of around 34 days, results showed that levels of testosterone and cholesterol in the men had fallen. A decrease in prostate-specific antigen, high levels of which indicate that cancer may be present, was observed in men with early-stage prostate cancer, although little effect was noted in men with more aggressive disease. Dr Demark-Wahnefried commented, "It's not surprising that a diet therapy that was only taken for an average of 34 days had little effect on men with aggressive disease. But what we did see was that, for the men on the diet, their tumour cells did not divide as quickly and there was a greater rate of apoptosis [cancer cell death] in this group." The researchers added that further research is needed to confirm the results, and also to determine whether the low-fat diet or flaxseed supplement was responsible for the findings.
